CALLING ZEUS

Hebden Bridge sculpture trail
 28th June - 28th July 2003
wood and bamboo,
360x130x15 cm

Nearly two million homes and businesses, lie in natural river and coastal floodplains around England and Wales. The Environment Agency's provide a general overview of areas of land in natural floodplains and therefore potentially at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea. These areas are  based upon historical flood records and geographical models. They indicate where flooding from rivers, streams, watercourses or the sea is possible.
Hebden Bridge lies on an area that is part of a natural flood plain, so consequently those homes near the Cragg Vale are at risk of flooding.
Yorkshire /England in general is an area on earth that rarely needs the spiritual power of a Rain Stick to summon to the Gods the desire for rain to make the crops grow and supply food and water for our animals, a device to summon the sun to appear would be of more use at times. So in an area that is prone to torrential rain with gale force wind at any time of the year, it would be ironic to come across a giant Rain-Stick, jutting out of the woodland.

I ask YOU to call out to Zeus the God of the skies the rain God. With my Rain-Stick, turn the axel causing the rain to fall producing a sound which will echo through the valley making sure the Gods hear its cries for miles around
