Dartmoor Sensing was a project that brought together four
professional artists and ten emerging artists. After a rigorous
selection exercise I was chosen to participate in the 9 day
workshop on Dartmoor which is the heart of the project. The
Project has three major components: the commissioning of a
series of photographs by John Curno; a 9-day workshop on
Dartmoor in July 2002 to create a series of works to be
exhibited; and the exhibitions themselves. |
| I was part of a group which consisted of David Berridge,
Emma Bush, and Alice Messham each talented writers. We worked
with three pieces of granite, around each of which they had
woven a series of stories, from factual to fanciful. In
exhibition, each of these rocks “speak” to the listener through
an ear trumpet device attached to each rock. There is also a
quiet sonic landscape of three combined tones, each emanating
from each rock. |

My part in the group was to turn their performances, around
the granite into a sound sculpture, creating the right sonic
environment as you approach the granite, as if they are trying
to communicate. As well as the sounds coming out of the ear
trumpets. All of the technical elements needed to turn the raw
material into a living sound sculpture were left to me as I the
only specialized sound artist of our small group. |
