MY FOREST ORCHESTRA
Hebden Bridge
sculpture trail
26th June - 25th July 2004 |
|
| |
|
| For this project I wanted to create a fully
interactive piece which the visitors could play with, involving
themselves within the evocative power that sound has to bring
people together. in a fun environment. |
 |
| WIND ORGAN |
   |
| I created a 4 1/2 meter high wind organ made
out of wide bamboo, I cut slots in each individual segment of
the bamboo, to create a variety of different echo chambers. when
the wind cut across the bamboo, a deep echo sound was produced
by the instrument . these types of instruments were
originally used as navigation devices to guides tribes people
back to there camps during the night. |
 |
|
RAINSTICK |
 |
|
I created a two tear rain stick or rain maker,
which when spun made a sound like a sudden torrential downpour
of water. These where originally used in tribal ceremonies to
worship the rain Gods and ask them for rain |
   |
| AEOLIAN HARP |

|
| I created a very simple wind harp that was
placed against a tree, so that it could either be played by the
wind whistling over the strings or by human intervention. |

|
| WATER POWERED TUBES |
 |
| I created a device to go in the stream at Hebden
Bridge, which had 2 water wheels attached to it. when the water
moved the device around little hammers would chime against metal
tubes creating a constant presence within the orchestra. |
  |
| SIMPLE INSTRUMENTS |
  |
| I wanted to created a sense of involvement
within this piece so that no matter how many people where around
it at one time they would all have an instrument to play. I made
various little instruments, from triangle, bells, mini drums,
mini rain sticks and shakers. that could be picked up and evoke
memories of times in school bands or music lessons. |
