| THE QUARRY JANUARY 2001 |
|
| |
|
| Many quarries that have been drained of their natural
resources, have now been turned into nature reserves. Kingsbury
water park is a prime example of this. The site would have been
a haven of mechanical noise previously. Now it is so peaceful,
just the noises of the birds and water lapping up against the
banks. I wanted to bring back some of the mechanical sounds, due
to the era when the quarry was active the noise would be
dominated by chain and belt mechanisms, this is what I wanted to
work with. Employing the wind to create the sounds gave an
uncontrollable life back to the site, which was truly out of my
control. |

| THE SCHOOL JANUARY 2001 |
|
| |
|
|
This sculpture was set in the site of a former
school that is now a petrol station. I love the concept that the
site has grown up, the place where children used to play with
their little toy cars, are now returning to the same spiritual
spot, but this time with bigger toys. Made especially poignant
as this was the school my mum attended, so I knew that a simple
sound on this site would evoke so many memories in her, as well
as everyone else who went to school, I just had to work with the
site The bell for me is the instant association with school,
so this is what I employed on this site, not a recognizable bell
but when the wind blew, the associated ringing gave a deep
reverberating presence. |

THE WORKER JANUARY 2001 |
|
|
|
|
Through the production of this sculpture the aesthetic of
the piece was not of paramount importance, function exists over
form. The object had a function, a job to do, to produce a
sound that was connected with what the site used to be. Thus
tying to evoke some degree of inquiry about the past. When
quarries are turned into industrial estates, the approach to
re-creation must be different unlike the Kingsbury site that is
now a nature reserve. Both sites employ vast amounts of people,
so I wanted to work with this notion, but still re-creating the
quarry nostalgia. So I though of a human working manually with
an hammer. This would employ so many associations.
I created a sculpture based around the striking of a hammer onto
a surface. As with most employees the mechanism only worked when
it was provoked, through the act of an external force, in this
case the wind. |

| RAINSTICK NOVEMBER 2000 |
|
| Using the concept of the rain stick, was one of my primary
attacks, focused around creating a sound that evokes a certain
feeling or emotion. Using simple material and techniques. I used
the idea of the rain stick with all it 's initial associations
with tribes' deserts and associated cultural rituals when I
enlarged it to a five meter high scale, it seemed to take on a
monumental appearance, it went from a toy, to a marker,
pointing toward the heavens. That two people had to work in
complete harmony to make it work. As if this partnership had to
be achieved to reach their ultimate goal. As the area that I
occupy does not require the spiritual power of the rain stick, I
placed them in a site that was flooded, as if they had done
their job. |
