Britain has the largest CCTV (close circuit television)
network in the world. We are under constant observation, in our
private telephone calls, private e-mails or private
conversations. This piece looks at, how we readily accept it (in
the name of personal safety) but with the constant fear that our
actions however minor, could be recorded and used against us,
are we now living in a society that has lost it's freedom? |
| This work consists of three main parts: One being the
mobile phones that have been left casually on the side, so that
anyone could pick them up and listen in on the conversations
that where taking place. These consisted of mundane calls that
each of us have each day, but also personal calls that you may
not want everyone under the sun listening to, as well as calls
that could be regarded as being sinister or having alternative
motives.

Second were the cubes that were suspended in my space, this
had the sound of the bottom of the gallery, around the corner
away from the cube being transmitted into it live. So that you
could hear the sound of the people down the other end of the
gallery, although you could not see them and more importantly
they could not see that you were listening in upon what they
were saying. |
|
Third was the second cube, that had a
soundtrack looped, based around facts on observation and
surveillance techniques being read by a mundane voice that keeps
on going forcing the facts into the mind of the listener, as if
delivering a propaganda speech. As you are contained within the
cube and the speakers are right next to your ears, it is as if
the sound is being drummed into you. But if you answer back to
the voice, there is a sound activated trigger inside it that
triggers an external speaker that tells you to be quiet, or to
shut up, or you are under observation and various other quotes
based around the same theme as if someone is monitoring you. If
you make to much noise out of turn, then you will be warned. |
